Hello everyone, I installed a Clarisea sk5000 into my reefer 250v3 sump last month with great success. Working absolutely brilliant! The Clarisea came with a roll of filter wool which it went through in just over 3 weeks. Happy with that and so purchased a replacement from a LFS in the UK. The new roll has been on for a week and again is pulling out all the junk from the tank with success. Yesterday I walked into my fish room and noticed a slight smell! Skimmer was cleaned on Thursday so it's not coming from that. Upon smelling the filter roll it appears it's that!

Anyone else experiencing this? It's strange that my first roll was ok and this new purchased one a week in has begun smelling horrible. Could there be a difference in rolls produced ie have I purchased an old version that has since been updated?

I would imagine any smells would be dependent on what was collected by the filter material and not the actual material itself.

I agree but what I'm saying is the first roll that came with the Clarisea didn't have an odor and the new replacement does. Could the roll material have changed and I've picked up an early old type roll?

While I don't have first hand knowledge of using these roller mats, I would think anything with rotting dead material in it, will eventually smell really bad.

Original roll was ok. This one after a week seems to be alot different.

I would just like to add! I'm not bashing the product rather looking for feedback!

Normal fish waste and organics.

the actual material used would have zero effect on odor but the type and amounts of waste collected most certainly would.

although I don’t run mechanical filtration any more I had considered one of these roller filters when they first came out but decided against it because I figured having a wet, nasty, smelly roll of used floss under my tank would be a bad idea.

Mine only smells when I have to unroll the dirty side to get it off to change it out. I can never get it to slide off as they claim.
