My Wife has a old clay flower pot that broke in the storm we just had. I was thinking of putting it in my next saltwater tank. I was talking to the guys at the LFS and they said not a good I idea. But I been watching Tanked. And they have this clear paint/sealer that they use for stuff to make it fish tank safe. Does anyone know the name of the stuff and where to get it?

Thanks

Al

Why did your LFS claim it was a bad idea? Clown breeders use clay pots all the time. The only reason could be it any pesticides leached into it. Breeders will also use ceramic tiles.

They said when It breaks down it could harm the fish.

Or was it painted/decorated.

Sent from my toaster using the Reef2Reef App

Yes it is painted..I will get a picture and post it.

I have clay pots in with my clowns for at least a year now and have encountered no problems at all. That being said I would not use a pot that was painted or previously used for a poted plant since I would be worried about leaching.

I put a plain clay pot in my tank for Beavis and Butthead (the two non egg laying clowns of mine) a year ago without any issues. It was not painted or glazed with anything.
I think this is a faily common thing. They neglect my 4 'nems in the tank in favor of the pot.
