Clean up crew in refuge?

Not at all.
Just like a display, look at what's down there accumulating and select accordingly.

I've got a medium sized turbo snail and a single small hermit in mine, I'm worried my turbo may be overdoing it, I moved him recently so he wouldn't knock down new frags in the display, but now the walls of my fuge are perfectly clean and I've got algae problems in the display tank (never had that before actually). But my point is that he keeps the fuge pretty nice.
