I have always kept peppermint shrimp, brittle stars and the occasional hitchhiker crab in my sump with some live rock to help keep my sump tidy (not a fan of filter socks). Does anyone else keep a clean up crew in your sump?

Urchins, emerald crabs, and some snails patrol my sump to police things up.

Yup

My snails start out in DT and flee at the first chance they get. I tend to pluck those out of the overflow and toss them in the fuge to avoid their ending up in a sock. I wouldn't put anything there that feeds on pods b/c that defeats the purpose of the fuge.
