I need a clean up crew!!
I have a 30 gallon Nano, and used to have 30snails and 30 hermits- tank was awesome clean!
Now it is down to about 10 snails and about a dozen hermits- some getting big....
Guy at my LFS said I have plenty, and sold me some snails that live in the sand...

Haha thanks I try to help with things I'm for sure on and the cucs from reefs2go have always been exceptional for me

I like trochus snails, nassarius snails, and fighting conches. Great thing about trochus is they seem to be the perfect balance between actually eating algae and being self-sufficient--they can right themselves when they fall, which seems to greatly improve their survivability. Hermits always kill my snails, so I avoid them, but that might have been a function of a very small tank (8 gallons).

How long do you think the CUC should survive? Mine dwindled substantially because I had a sociopathic emerald crab and some vicious hermits. Now the crabs are gone and I'm moving to a bigger tank that is just finishing its cycle, and I'm getting ready to buy a new CUC. Should I expect to replenish from time to time?

Well lets see here I have turbo snails ,astrea snails, cerith snails, nassarius snails, and nerite snails. i have some blue leg hermit crabs as well as red leg hermit crabs and a couple emerald crabs. i usually try to restock my CUC 2 times a year. Because there's inevitably some die off really it just depends on how much die in your tank. this is in my large tank (265) so theres plenty of room and i see little fighting and killing so you just gotta plan according to your tank size.

Okay, that makes me feel a little less like a monster, if I'm not the only one seeing some snail die-off over time. And I'm optimistic that the bigger tank will make the snails less likely to encounter predators.

Thats what i have noticed, in my 55 i refill it every 3 months because my crabs kill snails like its their job lol.

Of everything in the tank, the snails are my girlfriend's favorite. "Cows of the sea," she calls them. "Gentle, slow, magnificent creatures." All while looking right past my brilliant collection of zoas. Anyway, I've learned that if I want her to have any interest in (tolerance for?) the tank, keeping the snails safe is crucial. So okay, man on a mission.

hahaha seems like I can't get my girlfriend to love anything in my tank. if you want to ensure their safety leave out the crabs they seem to kill snails for their shells even though the one they have is the biggest. but i'd love to see your zoa garden.

I've convinced myself that once I get the spotted mandarin I'll finally win her over. Should be ready in about a year...

Ordered one from John yesterday. 40 bucks for over 100 animals shipped.
