Cleaner clams

I have a lot of clams mussels and bivalves. They are cool. I dont think they do enough to measure. Not like a skimmer upgrade.
Many states are adopting cleaning programs for their bays by Re introducing native clams mussels and oysters. (by re introducing I mean we ate them all and the water went bad.)

Mine were mostly hitchhikers and fish store finds. Ebay sellers seem to sell a lot of Florida mussels.
I did keep 2 oysters from a grocery store for a while. A dying sponge killed them. Im in Ca. the oysters came from mexico so not a totally cold water species. Had only been in the box 24hrs or less.
fresh water dip them and scrub. Its so gross what came off alive.

I have kept them alive in my tank as a food source for an Octopus. You can simply buy Little Neck Clams at the sea food counter at your local supermarket, just make sure the shell is intact and clamped tightly shut and the clam has no noticeable smell of decay, chances are good it's still alive despite being on ice for a week believe or not.
Other than a curiosity they offer no real filtration or nutrient reduction benefit though despite what a vendor claims.

I just like bi Valves. check on the type, a lot of clams burrow. some attach to rock like mussels and oysters.

They do filter the water but not as good a skimmer and unless you have a a dozen or so per gallon you won't see any changes.... They filter feed so think of them as bigger and more evolved feather dusters
