My sump is an eschopps rs-75, and for months I've been using the skimmer compartment as a refugium and it's worked well. My main goal has been to grow pods, and I've been using about an inch and a half of fluval ceramic bio rings as surface area I had from back using a cannister filter. Well now it's near impossible to clean, just tried and it released a ton of disgusting junk into the tank. I'm thinking of taking them out and replacing it with a few inches of sand. At least tdd that way it can establish as a DSB and if it gets gross I can siphon the top off without disturbing it too much. Which would be be better for growing pods?

I would keep the ceramic rings. I have a large container full of them in my sump/fuge and I have a ton of pods. I am more about the functionality of the fuge versus the looks.

As far as a sand bed in the fuge...I have no experience there, but maybe someone will chime in with their experiences with it. ;Happy

I'm thinking I'll just put them in a jar, or make a net for them out of some spare 1/4 screen. The stuff that came up from me just sticking a siphon into the rings was enough to make my whole tank cloudy, it was disgusting.

If you’re gonna clean your sump, it’s easier if you turn off your return pump. Then go crazy and refill the sump, and let things settle. Then restart the pump. I would also leave the ceramic rings in. The sand in your fuge would be just as dirty if you tried to clean it.
