Was he getting enough food? And do you know if you observed the clown picking on him at all? Could have been either starvation, bullying, or disease of some sort.

Shrimp in general are pretty sensitive to water quality. Any chance there was any exposure to copper or other metals? How long has the tank been running? Do you use tap or RO/DI? Anything new added or unusual happen with the tank lately? Any changes at all?

Despite the sensitivity of shrimp I have found cleaner shrimp to be quite hardy.

I've tried Cleaner shrimp in the past. The first 2 that I tried died the first day I put them in. It was suggested to me to do a longer acclimation, which I did. I ended up in a similar scenario as you. He lasted a few months, seemed healthy, then all of a sudden he was dead. I gave up on them after that. I never figured it out but am convinced it was due to something in the water quality. I've had a tiger pistol shrimp in my tank for about 2 years now. He's survived the loss of his YW goby buddy and over a year of tank neglect. (which is being dealt with now) So, maybe the pistol is hardier? Or maybe someone in the tank was picking on the Cleaner and I never saw it, although all of my fish would let him clean them...not much help, I know, but at least you know you ain't the only one that's had that problem...

Not sure about molting that quickly is normal either. Do you dose any supplements. Shrimp need iodine to stay healthy when molting.

Honestly, I don't keep shrimp at all anymore. They are more a nuisance than anything else if you are actively trying to keep your lps fed. Even when you keep them really well fed they will often rip open lps to get the food out. Very annoying.
