Hi reefers, I just added a new small cleaner shrimp to my tank couple weeks ago. He’s been doing well until a few days ago when he first molted in my tank (he lost one leg and his antennas were curled). He stopped scavenging and always stay in one spot. I suspect that’s due to lack of Iodine, so I dosed Iodine. Today, I saw him up side down on the sand bed. Looks like he’s dying even though he still moves when I touch him. Anything I can do to help him?

I have another cleaner shrimp that’s about the same size, and he molted couple times and it’s been going well.

How do you know you were low on iodine and it was affecting shrimp?

Salinity: 1.028 (I know it’s on the higher end, working to lowering it down slowly)
Nitrate: 2.5
KH: 7.3
Phosphate: 0.1
Calc: 490
PH: 8.15
Mag: 1500
Elevated magnesium can affect inverts

I do not. I only dosed 1/2 of recommended amount, and I use Fluval Sea
Unless you measure iodine and determine you are low. I wouldn't dose any. Water changes suffice to replenish that trace element.

My other shrimp is doing okay right now. Should I be concerned?
I recently had a parameter issue that killed one shrimp but my other two were fine, so yes, it can affect one and not the other. I’d recommend a water change if you can to be safe and get parameters in better range. Couldn’t hurt.

Some may be more tolerable. The only time you need 1500 or higher magnesium is battling GHA. 1350 to 1400 safer number for your inverts.

I just did a water change couple days ago, but I can do it again. Should I leave the shrimp in DT?

I’m not sure about these magnesium test kits. I’ve never does or added anything to increase magnesium but mine always seems to be pegged high.

54+20 gallon. Roughly 10% water change weekly
10% won’t change parameters much, so if you can do a larger water change, that might help. Though, it depends what salt you’re using and what the parameters are of the salt. If it has lower mag, then it could help decrease your mag.

I use Instant Ocean Reef Crystal

I’m not sure what the mag is on that salt, look at the bucket. You could also mix up some new saltwater and test it before your water change. But I did google that salt and magnesium and a post came up with someone else having an issue with high mag, so that could be the cause. You may want to switch salts. I use Red Sea.
