Cleaner shrimp

Will my trigger and pufferfish eat a cleaner shrimp if I add one? Or will they respect it and want it to clean them?

i have used a compatibility chart if not sure in the past. They can be found online. Some live fish sellers have them posted.

Always better to ask then take a chance. I learned that the hard way. A long time ag o when a newly added Huma-Huma trigger ate my giant lion fish. I still grieve for him.

I wouldn't say 99%. It's more of flipping the coin.... twice. There aquariums with triggers / puffers coexisting with cleaner shrimp. You can even YouTube it. You will see them happily being cleaned by them. However, you really dont know until you try it. Unfortunately, it's a very expensive single meal ($25-35ish) for one of them if things go bad.

What type of trigger and puffer do you have? Maybe some people can share their experiences with the same species.


My blue spotted puffer left my peppermint shrimps alone but other inverts like snails were fair game.

Lol all good I just copy pasted the link. I don’t think there’s anything against links unless it’s adult content.

Also I have a snowflake eel and I was so scared he would kill my 2 cleaners. I used to have a video on my phone when my eel got close to my cleaners and my cleaner would attack the eel. Funniest thing ever. But my phone got destroyed from water so I lost everything. Long story shorty my eel doesn’t mess with my cleaners.

Awesome how's your trigger? Are the rumors true that they'll eventually go rogue and murder everyone true?

So far so good. I’ve had him for ~6months. He eats a lot but has not bothered any other life stock.

It’s possible, but if added after the fish the odds are high that when added the fish see it as food and tear it apart. My golden puffer is a murderous fish he eats small wrasse and even coral catfish. Humu are touch and go. Ultimately though both fish are predators and anything they can catch, kill and eat is not safe. It’s always a risk.

Butterfly at greater risk depending on species/size. It's really hard to tell. I personally feel that the stories of clown triggers are a bit exaggerated, and I can only confirm 2 maybe 3 occurrences where they went haywire and murdered most if not all of their tankmates. Generally they're in 6 foot tanks or smaller. So I think they have a bad reputation, and perhaps it's not 100% warranted. That COULD be wishful thinking, especially because I have one in my 500 gallon with a lot of expensive, beautiful fish and I'd be devastated if it happened to me. But I think their reputation is exaggerated, personally.

I read a lot more about people saying they were model citizens. I personally wouldn't try it in a tank less than 8 feet long, as it's hypothesized that this is a big determinant in long-term success. I cannot be sure but I waited for my 10 footer to try.
