Cleaning / acid waging rock

Marine pure never sounded so good, just wish they made in rock shapes

That's a great idea. I'm a huge fan of Marinepure. Have it in all of my tanks. Cheers!

I am in a very similar boat as yours, and my rock was probably in worse condition. I have about 250+ lbs of live rock from a tank I tore down 6 years and put them behind some bushes at that time.

Now 6 years later, as I prepare for a new setup I literally dug out the rock from the ground covered in dirt, w/ roots, twigs bugs and all sorts of crap on it. For me a pressure washer was my best friend on this revival!

In short I have already washed and bleached it it and its currently soaking in freshwater to get all of the bleach out (I expect multiple cycles of wash, soak, pressure wash repeat and finally dry out in sun to remove any cholorine/bleach) and I intend to do an acid wash afterwards.

here's my thread on the current project , I'll update as it goes: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2650400

Good luck and cheers to reviving old rock!

Welcome to R2R! Gotta love how many different uses for a pressure washer LOL. Cheers!

FWIW, I just did a 13 day bleach bath on some pukani and it ate away/melted some of it. I didn't use any acid. Just a 1:15 ratio of bleach to RODI. Wasn't expecting that to happen because I'd not heard of bleach doing that before, but it happened to me.

The guys at BRS did a video that may help: https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/vide...s-what-is-the-best-way-to-cure-dry-live-rock/
Hope that helps you get all that great rock cleaned up and ready to use! Cheers!

H, I have just been through this exercise and followed the BRS video as a guide.

I did a 20:1 ratio with the acid and let it sit for longer than the 15 minutes they suggested. The first batch I did for 30 minutes and I lost 2 pretty nice pieces of Figi, they were so eaten away they just crumbled to pieces trying to work with them afterwards. The next couple of batches I did for 15-20 minutes and the rock came out in a better condition.

I've taken all the rock post acid bath and have them sitting in a 10:1 bleach soak. They been in there now for 3 days, I intend to leave them there for a week perhaps two.

I had a vermited snail outbreak and tore my 800gal reef apart.

Sad thing is, post acid bath, there were still some vermited snails alive when I cracked open some of the bases shells stuck on the rock. So I'm going to test a few more after the bleach soak. But if I have any doubts about 1 snail surviving I'm going to have to look at new rock

Good luck with your project
