Cleaning an old Octopus skimmer

Hello All! In the very near future I will be placing an old 55 gallon tank for sale. We took it down many years ago due to a terrible case of green hair algae. The Octopus skimmer we had running, I'm sure is pretty disgusting. I'm going to fill the tank up with water, and distilled vinegar to get it cleaned up. Will the vinegar clean up the skimmer as well?
