My chaeto mass has grown considerably, but I guess over time it has collected lots of crud and detritus in general, and since I’m having a small cyano problem it also accumulates cyano buildup that I just siphon off of it. But my question is, can I just extricate the entire mass and swish it around in ro/di to get all the junk out? Or should I use a fresh bucket of SW? I just don’t want to waste the salt if it’s not necessary.

I do weekly water changes, and on a monthly basis I will do the following (old tank water rinse)...
  • Put about 1 - 2 gallons of "old" tank water in a bucket
  • Take all the chaeto and plop it in the bucket
  • Swirl / jostle / manually manipulate the chaeto to clear the crud out of it
    • You'll lose some pods but they'll always repopulate!
  • Place the "rinsed" chaeto back in the fuge; discard the old tank water
Do this twice if your chaeto is that dirty... or more often (weekly) if it routinely collects detritus.

Hope this helps!
