Cleaning Cyanobacteria impacting coral

Ive had my Nano Reef Tank for about six months and have recently had my first Cyano outbreak. Im pretty sure its because I moved the flow pumps around so I put them back. Im getting it under control and regularly clean it off with a turkey baster. Recently, I noticed that two of my Hammers and two Mushrooms are shrinking. Is the swift squirt with the baster every couple of days injuring them or is something else? All my testing shows everything as normal and not changed in the past month although I haven't tested magnesium and have just ordered a test kit for that.

The occasional blast from a turkey baster will make things close up temporarily but usually are back to normal in under an hour. It's likely something else. Mushrooms and torches are both sensitive to excess flow and light. Maybe your recent pump adjustments have put them in overly direct flow. If you need help beyond that, you will have to provide system hardware information as well actual test results so forum members know what to aim for.

Before you start ripping apart your reef to clean everything. Test your Nitrate and Phosphate- in my experience, Cyano happens when phosphates are too high in relation to Nitrates. The solution could be as simple as a few water changes and reducing phosphates.

no you'd do that after tearing the tank apart.

testing the conditions of the invaded tank isn't the same as testing the conditions in a known clean safe and balanced reef

plus, all the feed waste from the first 6 mos in a nano is ideal to export/keep the next six months with strong feed input vs slowly backing off, to accomodate increasing waste + invasions already making use.

this is the classic crossroads of choice: export and win, or store up and hope for a better day.

there was action, with no downside. with positive reports any time you want to check/ask any rip cleaned tank.

also crucial: taking a reef apart and cleaning it isn't bad or destabilizing, or we couldnt have fifty pages of happy clean reefs in our home move threads and reef conventions couldnt have all their massive instant reefs ready to come and go to the event. its simply an oxygenating, waste + invader removing event with no downsides and its a way to stop wasting animals in the presence of massive takeovers while tinkering about.

since rip cleans save the animals in the tank vs harm them, it would be a better default option for nano reef aquarists, it gives a closed-ended date for the invasion vs months of testing using other means, and inaccurate kits.
