So I was wondering what the best method of cleaning my filter socks would be. I have read that some use bleach and a very few use detergent in a washing machine. To me, the idea of both of these methods makes me nervous. Can I use white vinegar? It naturally kills bacteria. And then rinse it really well with tap water? Thanks in advance.

Hydrogen Peroxide. I buy it by the gallon just for cleaning my filter socks. Let em soak overnight in a 50/50 mix of 3% peroxide and RO water and then give em a quick rinse with your hose or faucet. Peroxide breaks down quickly and in small quantities, is harmless to a reef tank. I also read an article that showed peroxide actually breaks down organics and makes them easier to remove whereas bleach does little to remove the gunk and simply bleaches it white.

I wash mine in my washer. I run the washer empty for one cycle to make sure there is no soap residue, then I wash the socks in a hot water cycle. No detergent, no vinegar, no nothing. They come out white and clean every time.

I give mine a quick dip in a cup of RO/DI water before putting them in my tank. I feel like this helps rinse any of the phosphates or copper that could potentially be in the socks from the tap water dry on/in them.

I also wash mine in the washer using bleach. I allow the dirty socks to dry out while waiting for the number of dirty socks to increase so I'm not running the washer every few days. Make sure to turn them inside out so the dirty side is facing out. Once I have a dozen or so dirty socks I throw them in the washer on a large cycle, put in about 3 glugs of bleach and let the cycle run all the way through then let the socks air dry completely. They come out nice and clean.
