So just got some filter socks and after first use I ran a empty cycle in washing machine then ran them now they smell like laundry soap are they safe to use

Best method I find. Use a sock that can be flipped inside out. Once used a couple of day I flip it inside out the run hot water in the tub the use a 5g bucket and with my hand inside the sock pressed to the bottom. I rapidly turn left to right and turn 180 to the Prather side and repeat. I pound it down and keep doing it till the water run clean a bit then add a bit of bleach and then rinse it out with water. Then dry. Then I leave the sock flip to use it then on that side. I keep 3 socks in rotation

I wash mine in the washing machine at least 3 times with hot water and no soap, then let them air dry completely. Haven't had any of them smell like soap yet. Could be your washer, if it has a "self cleaning" cycle I would suggest you run the washer on that setting before washing the socks with hot water.
Good luck!

^ also I only add like half a gallon of hot water each time during clean to see if that water is running clean and not diluted

I thought about running the sanitation cycle with bleach then running the socks again

If you run them through the washing machine, you might want to run the washing machine through a cycle with hot water with nothing in it to rinse out any soap residue before washing your filter socks.

I take them out side use a garden hose wash an out bang an around little to break up any big stuff then use hydrogen peroxide get a couple bottles put sock in small container so you don't use as much .the h p will clean all small stuff . works great
