Cleaning filter

So I have been thinking of cleaning my filter for the first time. It has only been a week since I started a salt water tank.

My question is that once I clean my canister filters and dump the dirty was that is in there now out what do I do with the empty container. Do I fill it back up with tap water? Because it will take water from the aquarium and I will have to add more water to it so what would be my best direction with this?

I would do a water change along with the filter cleaning. Fill the canister up with fresh saltwater as part of the water change
