Question for you pros out there: Is cleaning the glass and scraping algae off without having mechanical filtration a bad idea?

I am running a skimmer but I have no mechanical filtration in my sump. I could add a filter sock, but prefer not to use them if I don’t have to.

Alternatively I was considering cleaning when doing a WC to remove the scraped algae from the water column.

Just not sure how to proceed.

Hi!

I run with no filter, no skimmer, no sump..... no issues for me at all when scraping the glass.

Your moving the algae from the glass to another place when scraping it off, it will go where ever it ends up. If you can catch some in a sock or other filter that’s great- you have removed nutrients, but more is coming so make sure you know where the nutrients is coming from and if you have excess or normal levels.

Short answer- I just let it fly around and look at other signs for excess or normal nutrient levels.
