Cleaning intake sponge on HOB filter

Looking for suggestions on how to take the intake sponge off for cleaning without polluting the tank with gunk... my tank gets cloudy and all kinds of stuff floating in water whenever I take the sponge off to clean it. I was wondering if there was some way to cover it or something...

I'm new here and to Salt , but when I clean the HOB for my freshwater tanks. I keep clean bags my fish came in . I use one to put around the intake , so that when I turn it off everything goes in the bag . Not sure if that will work with salt tanks or not

This worked very nicely except for operator error. I allowed the water to spill over the top of the bag the first time, but the next time it was much better. Thanks so much for the good idea.
