Hi everybody, I just purchased a red Sea nano max. I got the tank set up and I'm ready to aquascape. I don't know if anyone here has used a purple reef but I purchased my live rocks and live sand from them. Their website says fully cured tank ready but I am wondering if I still need to clean them. Will cleaning the live sand turn it into dead sand?

Looking at their site, their live sand looks to be just regular oolite sand with some bacteria. Is there expiration date on it? Cleaning it is personal preference. Some leave live sand as is, put it in the aquarium and then deal with cloudy water for few days. Others clean it and dont get cloudy water, but then most of the "live" stuff is gone. In the end I dont think it makes any difference for this type of sand, as it is not truly live sand, full of life.

I don't see any expiration date. Thanks, I think I'll skip washing and deal with the cloudy water

Yep and the thread also shows another hidden detail: the bac on the sand don't even matter at any time as long as rock is used in the system. That's a tough rule breaking claim to consider but it's true

that's why in the thread we can take apart anyone's sandbed at any stage of reefing, rinse the sandbed in scalding hot tap water as long as you like, then saltwater, then put it all back without ever losing any tank. There are bacteria on the sand grains even after hot tap rinsing, but they just don't matter as rocks are still enough surface area to do all the work even if we boiled the sand sterile. It just doesn't matter what happens to sandbed bacteria in every reef I've ever seen and logged there

How the bacteria exist on the rock surfaces matters tremendously.

If it’s oolite, it won’t rinse well at all.
It’s like washing dust.

If it’s oolite , you may want to cap it with a larger grain of sand.

Do check.
