Cleaning modded Aquaclear 70

So i modded my aquaclear 70 into a refugium and thats what im using as a filtration system. My tank has been up and running for about a month and a half now and the aquaclear has gotten pretty dirty and theres like a film like substance sticking to it that i think is causing my water to look cloudy and dirty. So im asking if its okay to clean of that sludge film looking substance and if it would throw off my tank in any way.

Yes clean it but not while it's running. Do you run a skimmer also? I'm thinking that sludge is protein, which you definitely don't want getting into your tank!

Clean it. When I was running modded AC70's I would clean every other week.

No I don't run a skimmer, should I? What if I just keep running the filter by itself?

How exactly did you clean it cause i tried and failed miserably i had a bunch of the gunk fall into the tank. Is there anyway to stop that gunk from growing?
