Cleaning New Skimmers

I have read some wheres that you need put a new skimmer in a bucket of water with vinegar to clean the skimmer and I guess let it run as well...????

Does it matter if it is tap water or does it need to be rodi water?

How long does it need to be in there for?

I usually just give my skimmers a quick rinse under the faucet and then fire them up. Some break-in faster than others, but I'm not sure if a vinegar bath would speed things up or not.
