Curious as to what everyone uses to clean out empty or old tanks with coraline, and other algae still on the glass

For the glass I just use water and a brand new scraper. For other cleaning purposes vinegar helps as well.

Agreed with Tons, I just use a glass scraper that you'd normally use for painting. Doubt you'd really need vinegar, just be sure to avoid the silicone though.

Distilled white vinegar works well for anything that its really stubborn. To remove the algae build up that was on the back of the tank I filled it up with water, added a gallon of vinegar to 10 gallons of water and let it soak over night. Just don't do this with any livestock in the tank ;)

You can also use a 20% muratic acid to water solution as it will clean better/faster than vinegar and eats calcium/coraline deposits fast off the tank. Just use in a well ventilated area preferable outside and I never scrub pieces and use it for pretty much all aquarium cleaning. Just let it do its magic for an hour or so then wash well with fresh water.

Did you run the filters?

Circulation fans should keep the solution moving and blended but I've, personally, never had to leave my tanks overnight.

Though if no circulation fan, go ahead with a cartridgeless filter for flow.

Entirely, I would just scrape, hose, scrape, hose. A little elbow grease and a scraper go a long way to achieve a shiny tank. :D
