cleaning overflow box

Not sure if this is where to ask the question but my overflow box looks really funky. I wish I could put some snails in there but I am afraid it will get sucked up and clog my pipe causing a flood. How do you all clean it? Thanks, Rich

I vacuum mine out with a wet/dry vac

Just before I change my filter socks I use a bottle brush and scrub the overflow while the return pump is still running. This forces all of the gunk and algae into the filter sock. I do this at least monthly during water change time.

Isn't it a little cumbersome trying to get the wet/dry vac into the overflow? Do you have someone lifting up the vacuum while you do this?

I take a bottle brush and scrub everything I can reach, then while it is all stirred up I siphon it out during a water change.

Hose is plenty long to reach. I use the crevice attachment and there is plenty of room to work it around the stand pipes.
