I'm currently battling slime I believe caused by carbon dosing. My PVC is substantially blocked, drastically reducing turnover. I've never disassembled the PVC in my overflow, as it came assembled new. Any tips? Should it all come apart with elbow grease or will I end up cracking something?

If your PVC is held together with cement, don't try to separate the parts! They're now essentially a single piece of plastic.

If there are unions, you can separate sections of pipe there, and there are bottle-brushes on long flexible handles for reaching the rest. The blockage - is it a whitish, slimy, bacterial sort of growth?

Yes, from what I can tell. In the sump it is more pink and brown as other particles get stuck in it, but in the overflow it's white.
