I got same sand that has been sitting in a bucket for a wile now and some rock that has been in a open box. whats the best way to clean them? some one told me to stick a hose in the bucket intel the water is clear.

The hose in a bucket is fine for the sand. For the rocks I'd stick them in a tub or the tank you're gonna use and soak them in a vinegar/water mix for a couple days then in bleach/water mix for another couple days. Make sure you have lots of flow tho. I've done this with every batch of rocks I've ever used.

What kind of rock is it?

its rock form a friends tank. It was in buckets for some time. so would the vinegar thing be a good way to go? and how would i bleach the rock.

Ya it's pretty much the standard. After the vinegar/water bath rinse the rock and then stick them in a bleach/water bath. Just pour some in. You don't have to get all fancy with measurements. Just enough so you can smell it in the water a bit. Leave that for a couple days then rinse it again. Let it sit for at least 24 hours while the bleach neutralizes. After that you should be ready to cure the rock.

Rinsing the sand until clear water comes out of the bucket.
Bleach the rock, in a bleach/water solution. Give it a scrub down when this is finished and rinse them off.
