Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a small canister filter to clean up aquarium funk (Mechanical filtration only, I'm not filtering the water of it's chemicals). I've look at a couple like the Filstar, Eheims, etc.. just not sure which is best for my needs:

I would use the canister filter as a cleaning tool only, not 24/7. I'll only be using the sponge filter to sift out detritus... after I have turkey basted the tank. I'll be using it about once a week, just prior to a water change.

Thanks!

I have always liked Eheims but they can be pricy.
Honestly if you are just using them temporarily as a water polisher for detritus use a hob filter. They are fear easier to use and less expensive.

I much prefer to use a canister filter.. but maybe a hybrid like the Magnum or maybe the Tom HOB canister filter would be best.

I have the Rena Filstar xP3 on my turtle tank and love it. Easy to clean and reliable. For your purposes you'd need either the xP1 or xp2 depending on how many filter pads you put in it. I believe a single basket like the xp1 could hold a 20ppi pad, a 30ppi pad, a microfiltration pad, and a polishing pad, but having never used the xp1 I'm not 100% sure on that.

magnum 350 is great easy to clean I had a rena 3 & that sucker started leaking from the plug in the lid & I could never get it to stop
