I posted earlier about losing all fish today during a water change. We just took a sample of the tainted water and it smells strongly of Clorox. We have NO idea how Clorox might have made its way into our mixing station.

Thus far, we have:
  • 75% water change
  • Carbon (Rox .8)
  • Aimed all wave makers at surface
What else can we do to mitigate the damage?

Thanks,

Matt

Something like prime, which will help with the ammonia build up and clorines

Clorox is used to purify drinking water. Beyond neutralizing the chlorine with something like Prime there should be nothing else to worry about.

For all fish to die that quickly, if indeed its clorox in the water the concentration must have been pretty high, if it killed the fish that quick it probably killed all bacteria etc. I would definetly figure out what went in the tank that killed so fast and most important where it came from. Chances are you will need to start the tank all over again from scratch. I would do many water changes over the next 2 weeks making sure any remaining clorox that rocks and sand may have absorbed get removed quickly if they leach it back into the tank. Are the corals showing any signs of bouncing back?

FYI. Chloramines smell much more like chlorine than bleach. Much like the pool smell which shouldn’t be there. It’s the chloramines hat smell much more. If your water system added more chloramines to the water and or your ro di system hadn’t been changed in a while it could be chloramines. Or your smelling something else that isn’t chlorine which is reported. But the chlorine test goes against that. It seems it would be very very very hard to get a readable chlorine level as high as in a pool any way except someone adding it in. The chlorination in pools is much higher than in drinkIng water at least here
