I am starting my planning for my upgrade from a 20g to a 46 bowfront. I am planning to drill the new tank for overflows and returns, which will run down to my 10 g sump. i dont want to increase flow through my sump to much becuase i dont want to cut out chances for skimming. I really hate the look of powerheads in my tank as well. Most of the closed loops i read about are on bigger systems with big pumps moveing 2-3000 gph and more.

Is anyone out there using a closed loop on a smaller system like a 46? if so, what are some of my pump options? Also, am i trying my luck if i drill a 46g tank 4 times? its overall width is 36"

You'll be fine with a CL on your system. How many returns are you planning on running? You going to drill for the CL or are you able to run the returns over top the tank? Pumps for the CL would all depend on how much flow your going after. Couple of Quiet One 2200s or 3000 would do nicely. You could split them into 2 returns each also, that should give you some good flow in there.
You'll be fine drilling 4 holes for your lines.

I may drill five holes. A pump i was considering is a speedwave dc-300, because it is variable speeds. I was thinking of drilling a 1" to supply the pump, then splitting its return with to 3/4" Lock lines. The other two holes would be overflow and return for sump.
