I know it's common for them to shed but this is my 1st experience with this so I would just like some clarification. The toadstool has been closed about a week. I noticed it was shiny, slimy.

There also appears to be algae growing on it. My trochus snails sometimes cruise on it. I tried putting it a higher flow area and it folded up so I moved it back. What do you think I should do if anything?

Perfectly natural... just wait it out. Once mine turns shiny and that brown algae starts to grow on the coating, it will usually shed within the next day or two.

Is it on a plug or just buried in the sand?

I bought it secondhand. It is attached to a piece of PVC which I stuck in the sand. I was going to cut down the PVS so it wasn't so exposed but the foot of the toadstool travels the length of the pipe on the inside. Not sure how I can make it more appealing...
