So my tank has been running for 3 weeks now and I just recently had the lights running on a schedule and put a frag of zoas to just have as an indicator coral. The diatoms / green algae came in pretty quickly and has a decent coverage on the rock and sand. However, today I see that the tank is extremely cloudy and you can see particles circulating in a circle from the flow. I am wondering if this is alright and just kind of a peak of diatoms? or some kind of bacterial bloom. Are there any suggested actions? I am probably going to replace the carbon with new carbon and just ensure that I get a water change soon and change out any kind of filter floss.

Does this look normal and will go away over time?

I would get a CUC, as well as perform a water change when done cycling and change carbon as mentioned. Have you been testing your levels? What are your nitrates at?

Haven't checked nitrates but I will soon! Alright yeah I'm thinking a CUC would be good by now to get rid of all these diatoms!

Yes sir! I was actually going to suggest them, but figured you might have a different idea. My original CUC from them is still going strong 7 months later. Highly recommended. :)
Yeah I actually have one of their packages in a 20g long and they really clean up well and all roam around the tank! Only thing that sucks is the snail hunting hermits >:( lol

I was going to order a fighting conch from them this morning and when I checked the site, they were all sold out! I was able to find one a WWC though. If you don’t have one, I would look into getting one. :)

The cloudy water is a normal bacterial bloom. Normal new tank syndrome.

Water changes wont help. Remaining bacteria will just quickly multiply and fill in the new space. It will resolve on its own.

Oh okay this is what i was thinking and hoping for. New tank syndrome always make me worried for some reason lol, but also it seems to go away and get less cloudy when the lights are on. Do you know why this might be?
