I’m setting up a frag tank, it’s been running for about 48 hours now. But the water is really cloudy, I have a few small pieces of dry rock in there, but they were all washed with saltwater. I’m using chemi-pure elite filter media. I can’t think of what’s making the water so cloudy. I’m dosing Seachem Stability so that might be it. Any thoughts?

Any pics? Probably a bacteria bloom.

Bacterial blooms are common- a Uv sterilizer will clear it. Could also be your dosing- Idk what is in stability but ca/mag/alk make my water cloudy for a few days if all added at once. Or you didn’t rinse the rocks super well. I’d give it a few days to calm down or add a uv.

If it is a bacterial bloom (as mentioned) carbon and patience can be helpful. If you do not have a media bag you can always use an old nylon.

There’s also a rainbow like oily substance at the top which I’ve seen before in my freshwater tanks.
Excess nutrients maybe? I haven’t dosed anything but stability though.

I'd suggest carbon for both issues.

Had the same problem. As I was setting up a larger tank the sand was stirred and made the water super cloudy for hours before I got annoyed. I placed a (brand new) kitchen sponge inside the filter and about four half-sheets of bounty napkins layed out inside the filter but still coming out to touch the water in the tank. An hour later the tank is clear as day.
