66g reef w/rear sump 6 months old with 1 Rainford's goby ( added 2mos. ago), 2 Red fire shrimp, snails - 3 large Astrea, 3 trochus, 4 cerith, and 2 Nassarius ( all added 1month ago. *Had a Tuxedo urchin lasted for 3 weeks then died a little over a week ago - probably starved. Tried adding Brightwell SW-Clarifier a few days ago but didn't help. Then yesterday could only find 1 out of 3 trochus. So last night tried looking all over rockwork ( can't take it apart, all epoxied together) couldn't find them and they are usually out on the rocks. Sifted thru the sandbed which stirred up the finer sand so now it's even cloudier, but could not find the 2 trochus. Is it possible that they died and the red fire shrimp ate them. If that's feasible then wouldn't their shells still be around? On each end of rear sump replaced filter socks with large InTank media baskets and using extra fine filter pads to try catch the fine sand stirred up - seems to be working have to change the padding every few hours. Since it's cloudy couldn't do a nitrate/phosphate test although I don't have much algae except for turf growing in many places. Last testing for those 2 was about a week ago : nitrate = 2ppm (Nyos kit) ; phosphate = 0.007ppm (Hanna checker ultra-low range). Could this be a bacterial bloom ( never had one as long as tank was running) or from 2 trochus decomposing? I have a seachem Alert badge that was replaced last week and it shows yellow so I don't think there's any ammonia . Making up a SW batch and will do a 50% WC on Sunday. Was thinking about adding a UV sterilizer to see if that would help - IM Auqa Shield Uv sterilizer 10W - to rr sump. I have a large population of copepods so I know I'll lose a lot. Any advice greatly appreciated.

If you do a water change and it helps, then the cloudiness comes back overnight, its probably a bloom. I used the UV unit with great success, cleared a bloom overnight. However, I used it too early in my tank and made some other things get out of whack. As long as you feel you tank is fully cycled, stable, and properly maturing, you could drop that in there and clear it up in no time.

Thanks @ccombs. But do u know or anyone else if it's possible for the R. fire shrimp to eat the 2 trochus if they died? Or do u think they are decomposing somewhere where my '4 eyes' and flashlight can't see? **90-95% of rock scape including overhangs & caves I can see, almost looks like an M with middle of M not so pronounced.

Oops, replied twice!

Well good news. Added an IM aqua gadget uv sterilizer- 10w - to my rear sump a few days ago and & water has cleared considerably. That was some big butt bacteria floating around. Will run it a few more days to get water completely clear.
