Hello, I started my tank in October it is a 40 gallon breeder with a hob refugium and a canister filter. i have marine pure balls and a chemi pure sock in the refugium and the standard coarse filter, fine filter and bio balls in the canister. My water always seems cloudy. All of my freshwater tanks have crystal clear water yet I can’t achieve it with this tank. Any suggestions? Also my mushroom toadstool that I have had for a month has been bent over and closed up for the last 2 days. It normally bends but does not close up for this long.is this normal?

The cloudy water should clear up, just takes time. Mine took two months to clear with regular maintenance though I did not use any of the chemi pure or stuff like that.

The toadstool could just be going through a shedding phase and it is perfectly normal. Give him a few days.

Thank you. I also got to thinking, my freshwater tanks are heavily planted and have very large snail populations. I have only 7 snails in this tank and 3 in the refugium. There are 3 hermit crabs also. Should I increase my clean up crew? Also should I plant this tank, shaving brush, mermaid fan, red algae or sea lettuce?

You could get a couple more hermits if you want but if you want other CUC like urchins or conchs, I would only get maybe three more. You have enough snails though I would not keep snails in the fuge. You want algae to grow in there so it won't grow in your DT. And you don't need macro algae in the DT. If you want it sure, but it's not needed. Cloudy water in a new tank is not that much of a concern. It's a bacterial bloom and more CUC or macro algae is not going to dissipate it quicker. Just regular maintenance and your tank will find a balance on it's own.
