I know I have heard and read it a few times but.... What's been your experience with clowns and there colors fading while hosting nems??? I was talking to a breeder earlier and he saw my pair, my male has major black and all filled in.. My female has very little to no black "hosting a bubble tip" it was brought up that's the reason she don't have deep dark colors...and I was told from his exp he had a very pale looking clown while it hosted... About a month after he removed it the colors filled right in.... Iirc this doesn't happen with carpet nems only bubble tips... What's been your exp???

I had a friend whose Onyx clowns would not completely fill in with their black markings while hosting a RBTA. Once the nem was removed the colors began to fill in. Placed nem back in the tank and markings became more pale. I have also read on another forum about Rods clowns doing this same thing.

I have heard that, but i must be in the minority. I have a pair of rod's and female is full black and male is 3/4 black. Been hosting in a RBTA and lemondrop from start (fryish).

Intresting... While talking to the breeder yesterday he said had a bubble tip "Colorado sunburst" and it made his clowns rather pale... He also said he had some weird allergic reaction while sticking his hands in the tank one time, as if the bta was secreting some kind of toxin or poison..... Hmmmm strange... I always use gloves when handling nems so no idea if I would or not.... Don't care to find out either haha...

I've also read that euphyllia hosts will cause darkening, yet my male perc has actually lost black over the years.

My pair is a Percula and a Black and White Occi. The Percula definitely lost it's dark markings when I had the nem in the tank.
They are just starting to come back a couple of months after removing the nem. The B&W seems totally unaffected.

Here is what happened with my SI (( Salomon Island )) Percs.

When I received them,

After being hosted by an LTA (( M. doreensis ))

Switching to an S. haddoni (( there was about 30 seconds when they were not hosting either -- the time it took me to swap out the anemone )), brought back most -- but not all -- of their black,

The above was a couple of years ago -- I lost one, carpet surfacing, but still have the other. For about 9 months it was without an anemone, and I didn't notice any change in the black. It is now hosted by an E. quadricolor, so it should be interesting to see what happens.

A picture from about 9 months -- before the E. quad -- will have to take some updated pictures to see if there has been any changes.

In my experience of clowns hosting non-anemones, all of mine have turned blacker. My "fancy" occellaris pair actually has developed so much black that the only orange left on them is on their orange belly and face.

However, my maroon clownfish pair that host a rock anemone have kept their coloration.

^^^

I should note -- the last 2 pictures are the same clown, it was the male, and it now female. Here it is with its new partner, an B&W O.

(( picture was focused on the cardinal, so sorry for being blurry ))

Clowns losing their onyx coloration is a hit or miss. Ive seen baby clowns from the same clutch that are hosted by BTAs, some retained their black while others lost it. I have read about Percs losing black coloration in LTAs and gaining it in Gigs as well

the Picasso's that always host the BTA's have lost some black whereas the ones that only sleep in the BTA's are getting darker and darker. I think that the more my Picasso's hang out in the BTA's, the more they'll lose their black. I hope that they won't completely lose the black as the black on the white and orange is what really makes Picasso's stand out. we'll see in time how much they'll lose or if they'll get more black as they mature.

I guess it's really hit or miss as I've seen Doni's Snowcasso's hosting a RBTA and they have awesome black in them.

Hyper melanism in clowns can be cause by anemones with more potent stings.

Magnifica mertens haddoni and gigantea and most lps with cause a darkening. Bubbletips not so much or lta or sebea.

Most clowns get really dark in the larger potent anemones.

beautiful clowns...would it make a difference what type of bta it was? I have a RBTA and my clowns still haven't hosted it but it's only been about 2 weeks
