So I have a 5 gallon aquarium with tons of lps and some other coral and a few inverts(cleaner shrimp, hermit crabs, snails...) I mostly keep lps coral and a few softies(frogspawn, hammer, duncan, candycane, kenya tree ,and mushrooms)
I had a firefish in my tank and I liked him, i had him for almost a year. The only problem was that he was shy, I would barely see him, he would always hide in the rocks as soon I approached the tank. He evantuly died from starvation cause he was so shy he would not eat when I fed him he would just hide. So i would like to try to keep a occelaris clownfish (yes i know lots of people will think a 5gallon is to small, but i have seen lots of people have success and if he shows any signs of stress I will return him to the LFS) my concern is that since I dont have an anenome (and dont plan on getting one) I am worried the clown will host my corals and kill them. I have herd lots of stories of clownfish hosting and eventully killing corals especily duncans (my favorite coral), is this something I should be worrying about or is it safe to get a clownfish?

All help is appreciated

I had a clownfish that hosted a torch. The torch never wanted to fully open up. It definitely didn’t like the clown being around. When the clown got sick and died, the torch eventually returned to its normal self. I don’t think your corals will die. If it’s already hosting a particular coral, it won’t go to another coral or anemone unless its host coral is removed. What coral is it hosting? Any pics?

The size of the coral compared with the clown matters. Clowns can smother corals to death. I had a three head Duncan both my clowns tried to host to only kill one head. Same goes for anemones as well. Hope this helps.

Sometimes corals just can't cope with a clown deciding to host it. It's not natural for the coral and simply stresses it.

Sometimes corals dont mind though. It depends on the coral.

If you have a clown bugging a coral and you want to stop it, you can try moving the coral or covering it with something for a bit to see if the clown loses interest. Doesn't always work.
