I'm wanting a pair of clown fish but I dont want the standard or designer picula clown fish that everyone has. so I was thinking about getting a juvenile gold stripe Maroon and a juvenile lighting maroon clown. If I do this will 1 eventually be the female and the other a male and become a bonded pair?
Thanks

Not maroons you can’t they will kill each other you would have to get one that’s already paired

Maroons are one of the hardest clownfish to pair because of their aggressiveness they often kill the mate your attempting to pair it with sometimes even after they have been paired. A mated pair would be best or if you do attempt get 2 small babies or one larger and one smaller so they can sort it out as they grow up or their will already be a set hierarchy/gender. But in my opinion best to be kept single or if you want pair another type of clown.

Also I know certain dominant color clowns can show aggression towards eachother. Orange dominant attacking white dominant and etc. I'm not sure if it's also the same between gold and lightening but just something else to think about.

So even if I were to get say a black and white phantom juvenile and a black ice juvenile they won't bond because 1 is predominantly black/white and the other is orange/white?

Just wait until you find a pair for sale. I tried for about a year and went through about 14 clowns with zero success in pairing, even identical clowns.

It's not to say that they won't I just paired a Wyoming white and a Darwin. It's definitely possible. But some can show aggression towards other colors. It's easier to pair ones with similar dominant color. But that being said even 2 of the same color won't necessarily pair. The size is a more important thing than color either 2 small so they can figure out over time as they grow which one is which or decide for them and get one bigger to begin with.

If you go with maroons mating is much harder, they need larger tanks than most other clownfish species, they can be much more aggressive to fish in smaller tanks, and about 99% chance the maroons will begin to strike your hands whenever you reach into the tank. They dont hurt just gives you a bit of a jump scare, was startling for me as they always did it whenever my eyes werent directly on them.

No they can bond pretty easily actually. I dont think color really matters either as every time I have tried to pair clowns (except maroons) it has worked regardless of color. Pairing a wild caught percula with a mocha storm was harder but has since worked out as well. Maybe wildly different color patterns confuse them as it might indicate a separate species but not really certain there and i dont think there is any research to actually back up anything, just anecdotal evidence.

Just remember that maroon clowns are the most aggressive clown. Not just towards another clown but other fish. Years ago I had one and killed every fish I tried to put in the tank. There is currently another thread on here I just read asking how to remove a maroon for the same reason I just explained.

Ok maroons are out. Didnt realize they were so aggressive. I had one a decade ago and never had an issue with other fish but she did bite my hand whenever I put them in the tank though.
I think I'm going to try a phantom and a black ice. I have no intentions of breeding them just wanted 2 different looking clowns in my tank.
