Hi everyone,

I have a 6 inch clown trigger that isn’t doing well for the past 2 days. He is breathing hard with his mouth opening and closing. Occasionally he closes his mouth and seems to stop breathing completely for several seconds then starts to rapidly breathe again. He is energetic but doesn’t eat much and his stomach is slightly pinched. He has no damage and no one has harassed him. He is also a bit pale but has not white dots or red markings. He is not swimming at the surface and is not lying on the sand. He is unable to catch his breath and be calm. When he does eat, his breathing gets much much worse. Consuming a quarter of a shrimp or single formula one cube or half clam shell causes him to gasp for oxygen.
Ammonia is 0.01, Nitrat is 10, Nitrit is 0.02,
pH is 8.2
I’ve done a water change and also placed airstones.
Any ideas on what else I can do for him? He is a beautiful fish with a great personality.

Sorry your having problems with your clown trigger. How long have you had him? Did you add anything new to your tank recently?

Sorry for responding back late. 2 years, strong fish. Haven’t added anything. He stopped having the problem for a brief period and then it started up again a few days ago. Still when he eats, his gills move quickly. The trigger is not overweight or underweight.
