Hello, I purchased 2 black footed clown yesterday. When I put them in QT they were at the surface with their mouths out of the water as if they were trying to jump out. I have a cover. They stayed there pretty much all night. When I got home from work one of the clowns is having trouble righting himself. He is acting very normal and eating. Wondering what I should do. IIRc I had goldfish that would do this when eating off surface.

Could you post a video?

Hard to tell if it is swim bladder but if it is then there’s not that much you can do :(

Clowns often swim in weird patterns or even host random things in the tank. When you say it’s acting normal does that mean eating ok?

Sometimes constipation presents itself with similar symptoms in which case feeding a boiled pea and dosing epsom salt to the tank may help. Kanaplex has also been used.

In some instances venting the bladder may help but it’s not necessarily an easy procedure.

By acting normal I mean he is bobbing up and Down like clowns do. He is chasing the other clown away. Searching out food. Just on his side of upside down. They are hiding under the filter since they are so new.

I agree with above I would try feeding him a boiled pea (remove the skin before feeding) and or dose Epsom salts.

In the video it looks like he’s kind of trying to wedge himself behind that filter to hide. But, I do know that fish gulping air at the surface can lead to swim bladder issues...

I agree with the advice already given, I think I would start with the boiled pea/epsom salt and go from there...

If it comes down to it, there is a very detailed video and thread on R2R about venting a swim bladder.
