My clownfish avoided my two nems and decided my elegance was what she wanted to host.

I have read that some people have had elegances get loved to death and I have also read that the elegance can surive being hosted by a clown.

What are the signs I should look for to pull the clownfish?

Just a gentle point of clarification, the coral is the host, not the clownfish.

As for your question, if the coral is exhibiting normal “behavior” with the clown as opposed to without, then I think it’s fine. However, if the coral is receding or otherwise looking irritated, I think you have your answer.

I look at it like this... I had an anemone host a clown, something that is supposed to happen. That nem almost got loved to death. My point is that even though that pairing is what is “supposed” to happen, a negative outcome can be the result. If the coral and the fish are mutually benefitting, then you’re good, if not, then it will likely be obvious.
