Ok so where the heck are all my designer tomato clowns? I mean really? Heck were are all the regular tomato clownfish? I can't remember the last time I saw them in a LFS. Is it just my local area or is there a hobby wide embargo on these perfectly good clownfish that someone failed to mention to me? Enough of the percs. And ocell.

All clowns matter.

Tomatos get big and VERY mean when mature, most people want a peaceful tank. I love the look of Maroons but I would never own another in anything less than a 200 gallon tank. Personally I prefer clowns that do not rip my hand to pieces every time I put my hand in the tank. It's a personal preference. There are always the exceptions to the rule, I have yet to meet one.

Lol I know they get big but so do maroons. I always see maroons available at the lfs and you have various "options". I don't mind that not everyone is dieing to own a mini version of Diablo (my tomato). It is more that I can't even find her a suitable mate because others deemed them undesirable clowns. I have seen just as much aberration in tomatoes as far as color and markings but do they get a breeding project? Nooo. I have tried to have my lfs get them in and they cant. They "outrage" in my post was more for comic value but I do think tomatoes have more to add then they have been given credit for.

Liveaquaria is a great source for them. Ibluewater is another great site for clowns and they have some nice nice Tomato.

So hard to pair a Tomato or Maroon once they has established the entire tank as their territory.

Beauty in the eye.....yada yada. I love the intense red coloration and the attitude BUT I can only take getting bit for so many years.

My discrimination also works against Clarkii. :p

Good luck finding a boyfriend for Diablo, may the force be with you.

I'm going to try to pair her after a fallow period so hopefully she will be more accepting. She is clearing a nest site so I know for sure it is a she. I just wanted to find a clown that was a bit unique. It bums me to find that they exist but no one cares to try and make them available like other clowns. I do understand the issue of demand driving breeding but why can't I get a nice looking clown too.[emoji22]

Thank you. I will look at ordering one. I just wish the blacks or Phantom were for sure being bred. Heck even misbars lol.

I had a tomato pair, and they were not aggressive *to me* at all. They had a 30 gallon tank to themselves though; I never tried to mix other fish in that little space with them. Mine was actually really easy to pair. The female of my first pair died, so I picked up a juvenile. Heinz and Roma were laying eggs within a month.

I actually think tomatoes are awesome, and when/if I set up my dwarf predator tank, I will likely try to add one of the larger bodied clown species to the tank.

Now that my clown is in a large tank she doesn't go after me. I am sure if I put my hand on her "nest" that would be a different story but I think it is understandable. The only issue I have is she constantly cleans the rock she has claimed which means no coral frags are allowed on it. She broke of a trumpet I glued down and carried it halfway across the tank. It was an interesting sight.

I had a tomato clown - She established the whole 75g as his territory! Not a friendly lady - she murdered many fish, some larger than her. When I would clean the tank she would hide behind some rocks....zip out and nip my hands and arms, resulting in eraser sized bruises(its only a little funny till you're not expecting it haha!). Picture provided as evidence of evil!

I know that look well lol. It is the "if I could find my way out of this glass enclosures I'd murder you in your sleep" look.

Score one for tomatoes!

We need none of your hosting tricks lol

Deigner clowns do nothing for me. I like a black ocellaris and a regular pair. Cool enough for me. Spending hundreds on a fancy damsel is not my prerogative. However, in a nano or otherwise shorter length tank where your options are limited I think they're a very cool dose of color and uniqueness and do see the market for them.

That aside, I suspect the omittance of more common clowns at many LFS is largely due to profit margins, total profit, and demand.

I do like a few of the designers but not at the price they demand. I honestly did not expect the little guy to take to the nem like that lol. He will be bummed when I rearrange things in a few days.

LOL! I love it! My nano cube has a superhero theme. I told the kids that my future predator tank can be supervillains :)
