So sometime between 2000 last night and 0300 this morning my Clownfish made this crater in the sand this the spot in the tank where they hang out every night but the first time they cleared out a crater its about an inch deep and about 4 inches around why would they do this not that I mind they cleaned up the sand really nicely lol Crater 1.jpg Crater 2.jpg

Thanks I'm brand new to this only had my tank about 3 months now and saw that and just thought what the heck, yep the sand is very clean there lol

They spawn constantly, and when they are not spawning, they are thinking about spawning and where to spawn. Or they may be watching Jeopardy :D
Mine seem to have done this too! I've only had them 2 weeks and they are the only fish in the tank. I noticed a dent in the sand in a corner getting deeper every day, was so confused lol. They weren't a bonded pair when I got them but always stick together once I brought them home.

I was literally just getting on here to see if anyone thought my clowns were doing the same thing! They're the only fish in the tank so I don't see any other explanation. Interesting!

4 clownfish, is that advisable? Asking because I’m interested lol

I really can't say whether it is advisable or not I just got involved with a reef tank in December I have read "yes it's fine" and "no never" but I can share my experience with them. The guy that I got the setup from told my son that he had tried several times to introduce regular orange clowns but the black ones would kill them every time so after a ton of reading and research I figured that the reason he did not have any success was because the species of orange that he was trying to introduce was the problem from what I could gather from research was that yes you could have mulple pairs of clowns as long as they were the same species and smaller when introduced so we decided to give it a try, the blacks are Ocellaris and I suspect he kept getting true Perculas so we went to our LFS (not really local 60 miles we live in the sticks) and got the two orange and made sure that they were actually Ocellaris and not true Percula, the black lines on the Ocellaris are thinner than Percula and sometimes not even distinguishable. Now for the behavior since introduction, once we put them in the tank they immediately swam to the much larger blacks who accepted them as if they had been tank mates their whole life the orange would swim in and out of them, alongside them and sleep with them from the very first day and still do going on almost two months now so in my very inexperienced opinion I believe as long as they are the same species it's O.K.
