First let me start out stating that I use to have a nanocube setup with two clowns and a sixline wrasse. Unfortunately my clowns of two years got brook out of no where and passed away in May. I was working on setting up a new 75G tank that was going to replace my cube. It was not until July 25th until I had moved any coral or rock over to my new tank. I still had the wrasse in my cube at this time so I realize he could have acted as a host. The wrasse was not transferred to the new tank.

During this process I had bought two clowns and put them through QT using the TTM. I introduced them to my new tank two weeks ago, and they have been eating like crazy. For the most part everything seems normal besides them nipping at each other at times. They can be a little aggressive at times. They also have been trying to host some of my LPS as well. One of my clowns in particular has some light coloration (possibly sloughing of skin) on one side in particular. Both clowns also have 1 or two spots that look like they were stung pretty hard and got hyper melanization. Is it possible that the white sloughing of skin could just be from biting and irritation from corals? Both clowns are still swimming fine and eating great, it just worries me since I lost my old clowns to brook. I will try to post some pictures tonight.

Could be, but that could mean bacterial infection has set in on their skin. If so, a rather gentle first level of treatment could be with an acriflavine product like Ruby Reef Rally for its antiseptic and antibiotic qualities. But I would have some NFG (nitrofuracine green powder or furan2 + kanaplex + metro handy.

Okay, so I was able to catch the fish and put them in quarantine. I’m going to let them adjust tonight and treat tomorrow. Do you all suggest doing a rally bath or just dose it?

Also here are some pics of them. You really can’t see anything from the pictures. It is really only noticeable in the blues. I wouldn’t really describe it as sloughing, more of like a whitish overlay of the skin. It seems to be localized on one side of one of them, which makes me think it’s not brook. What do you all think?

I would treat with Kanaplex + Furan-2 + Metroplex. (Or at the very least, Kanaplex + Metroplex.)

That combination treats most bacterial infections + brook.

I believe I have Metroplex on hand. Any suggestion of brands or will the API stuff work?

Any reason Kanaplex and Metroplex would make my QT water murky? I have an HOB with marine pure balls and powerhead running. Fish seem fine but the water is murky.

I just battled Brook with my new Clarki clown lately in QT. Metroplex dosed in the water along with 5 minute fresh water dips every other day took it out. I haven’t seen any symptoms for 45 days or so now.

Sometimes the meds can cause a die-off of some of your beneficial bacteria in the water column resulting in the "cloudy" condition. Curiously, it happened to my QT when I had a Marinepure plate in the tank. The plate's bacterial died and turned the plate into a slimy mess. Lots of water changes, powerhead aimed up to the surface actively rippling the water. Tossed the Marinepure plate. Now I use Fluval Biomax ceramic media inside my HOB and have never had the problem return.
