So yesterday I noticed that one of my clownfish looked bloated just under and behind the pectoral fin. I have noticed the aggression between the two pretty much stop. Unfortunately I couldn't get a good picture I will try again today. Are my clowns going to spawn? Is my clown sick? I have had the fish in my nano for longer than two years with a yellow watchmen goby. I havent added any fish to the system in years. The only thing that has been added to the system is snails and a shrimp here and there to replace the cuc. What are your thoughts?

I did confirm that it is only the one fish that has a big belly, both fish are breathing and eating normal. I was unable to get a picture on my lunch because the fat one is hosting my xenia and I couldn't get a photo. I will try again when I feed tonight.

She could be gravid or she might just steal most the food from the male and getting a lil chubby.

Is it the larger fish that has the larger belly? Can you share a picture by any chance?

Do you see any nesting behavior? Are they cohabitating in the same place and ‘cleaning’ any particular patch of space?

These are the best I could get the others came out blurry. One is only slightly larger than the other. You can kind of see the bump in the side profile. They lay in the xenia a lot now compared to maybe 4 or 5 days ago.

Edit: you can see it bet in the second picture where the fish has its side to you.

They both hang out in the xenia one of the fish used to sleep in the front left corner and now they both sleep in the xenia this happened a few days ago.

If they are still behaving normally (eating, staying in their host), I would just keep watch for any other changes. Those two are similar in size so can’t really tell if they are paired. In mating behavior, the male will be more passive and shiver/shake around the female.

Ok, I will keep an eye out (I do anyway but I will pay closer attention). I wanst sure about the shaking because in my cichlid tank (which I have had 2-3 time longer then the reef) thats a sign of aggression. I have noticed this shaking I thought it was one trying to dominate the other to become the female. I have had them for at least three years now and I got them when they were very small.

cool. Females take several years to mature to breeding age, so the timing seems to be matching what you are seeing. I’ve raised a few batches of fry so if you ever decide to invest the sweat and energy, let me know!

I am definitely interested in raising fry! It would be really exciting and rewarding.
