You can but they probably won’t mate. I kept 2 black percs and put them in at the same time and they mated right away. I’m sure the two different types will coexist but probably won’t play with each other like you may expect with same-type clowns. Perculas can be can be quite temperamental FYI.

what do you mean by "mate"? :)
i have had clowns in other tanks before but they never mated i.e. produced offspring.

also is it better to get 2 of the same type?

The Maroon clown will kill the Percula in short order. A 20 gallon tank is also too small for a Maroon Clown.

Two of the same species max is the general rule for the average aquarist who does not have a 6 foot long tank.

The one on the left (maroon) will not tolerate the one on the left (occ?).

edit: right (occ?)

Taking Maroons out of the equation, look around and see what you like, then double check back here.

For a 20 I would recommend one of the many varieties of Occelaris. They stay relatively small, are hardy and fit the bill for active and “playful”.

Later on, if you are like me, the clown addiction will set in and you can look into setting up some individual species tanks. With Maroons especially, consider a species tank for a pair. I used to have a room full of clown tanks and it was pretty awesome.

Good choice for a beautiful, engaging aquarium resident. They may be the most "common" clown, but in this case it's with good reason.

i had seen the brown clown in a friends 20 gal tank, BUT he was the ONLY fish in that tank.

Lots and lots of color variation, and you can mix different strains, like an orange with a black, etc.

Really !!!!!!

so as long as they are Occelaris any color will do, right?

Yes. Black + snowflake, or orange + Wyoming white, etc.

Some folks report mixing perc and occ too. Just stick to occ and/or perc.
