i have a 14 gallon biocube tank with one clown fish in it. Over the past couple of days I tried to add another clownish to the tank on two different occasions and they both died within 24 hours. I tested my water and it was all normal both when I tested it and a store tested it. I did not notice any fighting between the two fish. And the other fish is doing fine. Does anyone have an idea as to what could have went wrong or what I can do so that the next fish I put in does not die as well.

Hi. Can you provide us with some more info.

Did the dead clown fish have any marks on them? Or ripped fins?
How did you acclimate the fish?
Can you provide a pic of your current Clownfish?

Yeah, more info would be ideal. What is your specific gravity, and do you know what SG was where the new fish came from?

Niether of the dead clownfish had marks on them. However I did notice that right before the second one died it turned pale for a couple of hours before it died. This is my current clownfish that is doing well. The marks that you see on the glass are on the outside of the tank not inside.

My SG is 1.024 and the tank that it came out of at the store was 1.026. To account for the change in salanity I added water some of my tank water to the bag slowly before releasing it. Both fish came out of the same tank at the same store

Might just be the lighting but this fish appears a bit pale to me. Are you sure your ammonia is zero?

Yes I just double checked all of the levels. But my light is very bright on that tank

I only have a a spare 5 gallon tank that I could use as a quarantine tank I'm just not sure how long it could stay in that tank for.

With a good size sponge filter seeded with "bacteria in a bottle" and good aeration--it should be fine.

What size clown did you try to add? Same size as current fish, smaller, or larger?
Agree, I would quarantine the new arrival. Did they tell you they run at 1.026 or did you test the bag?

You could QT one clownfish in a 5 gallon tank for a month or two easy enough. The clowns turning pale and dying so quickly points to one of two things.... velvet or brook. Being clowns, I'd say brook though it's difficult to tell for sure without more details on behavioral or physical symptoms. A little light reading:
Brooklynella (clownfish disease)
Velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum)

Are you using lights? If the tank gets any daylight then a spike in the photosynthesis takes place. Be sure to have limited daylight and use LED's to light the BioCube. Some guy on eBay/Amazon made a pretty nice DIY system.... If you just have fish and no corals, don't use lights, or use very limited light.

Clowns are clowns. If they are not clowning around, I think something is wrong. I have had my guy a year+ now and just added another. Remember the ocean was not built in a night. Your going to need some intense understanding of the hydrosphere in order to understand how to recreate this environment in maybe twenty years (respects to all the old heads who have stayed committed to this wonderful hobby)
