I have a maroon clownfish thats been in my tank since the start.is it safe to add a small common clown or will the larger maroon clown attack it?

Adult maroon clowns are extremely territorial. I would say that it would not be safe to add any other clown unless your tank if very large, then you could possibly swing it.

Completely agree....maroons are one of the worst clowns for territorial battles.

Large maroons get darker in color when they become females. If this sounds like what you have, then you might try a very small, light colored maroon. This is how I paired mine up. I would not put any other type of clownfish in your tank, for reasons mentioned above.

I have a very large 4-5" goldstripe maroon...she is a &/@&" to the other fish in the tank (tangs, foxface, etc)...she would kick any other clowns butt....
