Hi all

So I used an empty coke bottle to mix up some magnesium. First I rinsed it with hot water and then with rodi. Then I mixed the magnesium and used half of it. But when I smell the bottle it still has a strong coke smell. Could this affect me reef?

No it's ok

For the Next time clean it out with white distilled vinegar and hot water. Let it soak and dry. It should be fine afterwards. Also, it might affect your reef? But it's hard to say. There's no telling if there was any actual Coke residue in the bottle or if it was just the smell. Keep an eye on it.

I've got a radical idea here. Maybe you should use a used water bottle instead.

I know, I know. Totally insane to think a coke bottle might not be the best choice.

Coke's pretty much water, acid, and sugar. I think the only thing that would happen would be akin to sugar dosing and the slightest, unregisterable drop in pH.

I think you're fine haha.

Selena does too.

once a poster asked if there was any harm in a razor blade that broke off and fell behind her rock structure. I said no, then proceeded to rot one out in my pico to measure impacts of rust, it conveyed a bit more algae scraping to the glass but not much impact overall. no chemistry impact I could measure or coral action impact.

looks like a squirt of coke is in order, I bet its a minor bac bloom not hideously different than a squirt of vinegar, or vodka. there are people dumping measured bleach into their tanks, coke should be a cakewalk. ouch on that 4.2 ph tho

They use phosphoric acid iirc, I'd be more concerned about the phosphate spike than anything. But that's only if you are pouring coke in, I wouldn't be concerned about residue from a bottle. I used a coke bottle to hold my vodka vinegar mix for carbon dosing.

FYI, a little bit of coca cola isn't going to be a problem, aside from a bit of algae perhaps, and certainly a rinsed bottle is no concern. :)

Good then I won't need to dump some in and press things heh

Awesome thanks all.

And to this guy, totally insane to think I don't have any 2 litre water bottles laying around and used the only thing I had on hand? And guess what, nothing wrong with coke ;)
