I will like to collect some tropical strays by Long Island. I live on the western end of the south shore, The town is Lawrence if anyone knows the area.

Should I go into the Bay or ocean? Dip net, minnow trap or cast net?

Thanks

Following along. I haven't done this, but I know some of our local club members have done it in inlets and estuaries along the Jersey coast. I know they've caught in Shark River Inlet using a sinking seine that was left for a couple minutes and then quickly picked up. They have also used scuba and nets to catch them as well in deeper waters.

You will find more strays on south shore (ocean). Cast net would be best bet out out of your 3 options. Beach seine would probably be the best if you can find one.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Could I just go to any beach?

You would go to Oak Beach Inn beach with a 20' 2 man net. I am going tomorrow to the tide pool in the Sound for shrimp and hopefully next week to where I mentioned depending on the tide which must be low

You too crazy. Lol
I wonder how many tropical fish they have in new York area? Stray fish, like they ran away from home.

I bet when Sandy hit some tropical fish found their way down into the sewer, where they are currently residing as "fish troglodytes".

Lol, some fish would better in the sewer than in am aquarium sometimes. Lol The irony.
There are schools of moorish idols living down there, turning into gangs of troglodytes.

Down in FL its easy to catch tropicals in the Keys, you just have to be careful that they are reef safe

Me and Abe Lincoln have been collecting fish (and amphipods) for quite a while. If he was with me instead of going to Ford's Theater, He would still be with us. Kind of.

Paul, can we see a pic of you & Abe together? ;) With Photoshop it can be done! :D

Abe was camera shy. I think we had a guy do an oil painting of us but it is hanging in the capital.
I went collecting grass shrimp today, right here.

I took a guy with me collecting and I have been telling him how many shrimp there are so I am glad we got a few hundred shrimp. If we didn't collect any, I would have been up Sheets Creek

Pod season is over. There are still pods but they are so few that it is not worth it. I think they all go on vacation this time of the year. At the beginning of the summer you just have to lift a rock at low tide and swish it into a bucket of water to get thousands of them. I was there today but it is slim pickins.

Is it to late to catch tropicals? Is point lookout near Lido Beach and Long Beach a good spot? I will like to catch groupers.

Any tips? I have a dip net?

Although they have been know to venture up the east coast, I don't think you'll want an Atlantic ocean grouper. First off any grouper requires a large tank, but the Atlantic ocean group can grow to over eight feet and weigh more than 400 pounds.
