I have found someone who is selling a biocube with a skimmer, led lighting, powerheads, salt and sand for 75$ (the tank is 29g). I have LR at my house from my 120g. I was just wondering if this idea of housing corals at college would be a smart idea. I would take around 5g from my 120g and some LR to really speed up the cycle on my biocube. The only problem is I would have to bring home the corals for winter, and also for the summer. I only live 45 minutes away from my house.
I want input to see whether this is a smart idea or not. My idea is to maybe run the tank over winter break without any livestock in it so the water is okay, or does it not need to run if there is no live stock in the tank?
Suggestions and input is greatly appreciated

You can't really beat the price. And who wouldn't want a reef in the room at college? I say go for it. Everything should be fine. I would leave it running while your on your winter break but the summer break (if not taking summer classes) would be to long IMO. I would just break it down for summer. While away shut the skimmer off so it doesn't overflow or anything.

GO FOR IT!!

Ahhaha i really needed to hear that! I really love reefing and I come on here and stare at everyones tanks getting angry at myself for not having one. I will definitely bring it home for summer, but am just scared for leaving it on over winter break. I think it should be okay though! Would the water level go down too much that the water wasn't high enough to get in the filter?

Just double check with the college to make sure it's OK. Many dorms restrict the appliances and don't allow fish tanks. If you're going to be in an apartment, sweet go for it!!

Yeah I will be in an apartment, I will ask when I get a chance. They allow fish tanks so there is no way they are going to make us turn them off. Do you think the water level will drop too much?

It is possible that it could. I would do some testing this semester and see how much evaporation you get in one day/week. Usually winter break is 4 weeks or so. And with you only being 45 minutes away it may be worth the drive to go over once and top it off.

Yeah thats true. I will definitely see the evaporation rate of it. I could pry come up after 2 weeks and just refill it and it should be good.

Yeah. As long as nothing happens out of the norm.

Right. I really hope so! I just know that no matter what I decide I think a 29g biocube with an aftermarket powerhead, 3 led lights, protein skimmer for 75$ is an outrageous deal
